As seen on Highway 59, a recent billboard had everyone talking, and not just in Wyoming. The sign that read, “Wyoming has gonorrhea. Do you?” went viral in October in the national news and on buzzfeed.com. Less than one month after its reveal, it was taken down.
The Wyoming Department of Health placed the billboard encouraging people to get tested for sexually transmitted diseases. Many negative comments were made about the blunt message and many suggestions were made that revolved around a more educational sign.
The STD prevention initiative was to inform people and reach out to them through knowyo.org. 125 cases of gonorrhea were reported this year, while 75 were reported last year, just in Wyoming.
While this certain billboard was taken down, many different versions of the signs concerning HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia, or STIs in general are posted all over the state. They can be found in casinos, town centers, and intersections in Wyoming and the other 5 states with the highest rates of STI’s.
Whether a discreet statistic or explicit sign be shown, Wyoming is in need of advocating for the sake of the rate of STI’s. The billboard may have upset some Wyomingites, but the numbers tell the real problem and KnoWyo is advocating for a STD free state.
