WYDOT lowers speed limit: US 14 Bighorn Mountains

WYDOT has announced that the speed limit will be lowered next week on a ten mile stretch of roadway on US 14 from Dayton to Burgess Junction. The speed limit will be changing from 65 mph to 40 mph beginning at mile post 70 (near the cattle guard below Steamboat) and ending at mile post 80 (near the old game check station).

WYDOT conducted a speed study on this section of highway and concluded that the 85th percentile speed in this section of the mountain pass was 39 miles per hour.

The speed study was a result of the increased amount of truck accidents WYDOT has seen in this area in the past year and a half. Of the 11 truck accidents on this stretch of highway in the past year and a half, one of those resulted in a fatality.

There are 36 curves coming off of the face of the mountain in this 10 mile stretch.

“WYDOT tries to post speed limits within 5 miles per hour of the 85th percentile,” Jim Evenesen, WYDOT Traffic Engineer said.

The speed limit is anticipated to be changed sometime this first week of October.
